This is a Caterpillar Birthday Cake I found in the Woman’s Weekly kids cakes and thought I’d put my own twist on it for my son’s 2nd birthday.
I ended up making chocolate mud and white chocolate mud cakes in round bowl type tins and then cut down into the correct sizes until I got the right length too.
I then covered all pieces with Betty Crockers ready made icing. I individually placed shredded coconut in bowls and slowly added food colourings till I got the desired colours then gently rolled each piece into the coconut.
I coloured a whole lot of green coconut for the caterpillar to sit on and assembled each in size onto the board.
Mini M& M’s were used on the body, jelly beans for the feet, yellow pipe cleaners for the head along with mints and smarties for the eyes and liquorish mouth.
I finished the whole look by melting and making a slab of chocolate that I could use for name and age.
This Caterpillar Birthday Cake is a very time consuming cake, took over 10 hours from start to finish. It may be easier to bake the cake a day or two before and freeze portions.
