Coolest Race Track Cakes

I made this Cars cake for my son’s fourth birthday party. He requested the Piston Cup race from the movie “Cars” so I started researching Cars and race track cakes on this site. This cake is a combination of several ideas (thanks all!) from this site as well as my own creativity.

I used an 11×13 rectangle cake pan with chocolate cake and iced it on top in chocolate fudge icing. I measured about 3″ from the edges and marked the grassy area with toothpicks. Then I used a star tip and green icing to make the grass. I measured again so that I could make the curves at the corners because I had a rectangle cake and wanted an oval track. I pushed mini Oreos all around the grass to look like tires as well as at the corners where I also made grass (a different green color). I used white icing with a leaf tip for the wide lines around the outside edge of the track and used the same tip with the lemon yellow icing. I used the round tip for the finish line.

I thoroughly washed my son’s toy cars from the movie and placed them on the cake. I used checkered flag picks and wavy candles as well as the large “Cars” candle in the center. I finished it off with sugar letters to spell out the “Happy 4th Birthday Adin” in the center. The last step was the edge. I lightly iced the edge of the cake in chocolate (a lighter color different brand) and stuck Honey Maid Sticks around the edge. The cake was a hit and I was repeatedly asked where one can purchase race track cakes like this.

Race Track Cakes

I got some great ideas for race track cakes from this website to make this sixth birthday cake for my son, so thank you! I used a two cake mix pan and made a rectangular cake, half chocolate and half yellow, marbled in the middle. I frosted the whole cake with a layer of white buttercream as a crumb coat then used black coloring to dye chocolate buttercream to make the “6”.

After frosting on the six I used green frosting with a small star tip to make the grass. I found the checkered flag toothpicks at a party store and cleaned up a few of my son’s favorite race cars. He and his friends loved this cake!
