My hobby is cake baking and decorating. A good friend of mine asked me to bake her son a birthday cake – he wanted Percy the Train.
I began to research images of Percy on the Internet when I came across this site. I looked at many cakes and decided that I was going to build a round base to work with; that was going to be the Island of Sodar. Then I baked two loaf cakes and carved and stacked Percy from that. Finally came the icing and finishing details.
This is a cake I would have loved to have had all morning to work on, but the party was at 10:30 a.m. so I had to hurry. Transporting a cake this big was a challenge, but seeing the birthday boy’s face made it all worth the effort. Needless to say the birthday boy said, “he had the coolest cake ever!” All the moms loved it too. I even had several ask me to bake cakes for their child’s birthday (in my spare time).
Hi Ginger, Very nice cake indeed. Ginger, how did you stabilize the train to the round base cake? This cake looks very stable.
Hi Kamari. The base of the cake is just a loaf cake. I carved away until I liked the way it sat on the round cake. It was unbelievably stable.
