Wonder Pets – Ming Ming Cake

For my son’s 2nd birthday, I thought it would be great if I could make a cake of his favorite Wonder Pets character – Ming Ming. If you are reading this, you already know that there is no easy or quick way to make a Ming Ming Cake. So….I had to be creative.

After searching desperately for a cake pan in the shape of a duckling, the closest I could find was a Wilton’s Stork pan used for baby showers (the stork is carrying a baby in a blanket from its beak).

Using a box cake mix of your choice, bake the cake in the stork pan and allow to cool. Cut away the baby in the blanket and trim off the bill of the hat.

Using a picture of Ming Ming from one of my son’s books, I colored icing to match Ming Ming’s hat, cape, legs, beak and body. Be careful coloring the pink to match the beak if you are using Wilton’s pink to color your icing (a little goes a very long way!!!)

As an amateur cake decorator, the next part was a challenge. Start by adding an aviator’s hat and cape using a star decorating tip (I used a #16). Then decorate the eye, beak and legs following the imprint on the cake. For the wing, I used the basket decorating tip. Then, fill in the body. Now you have a Ming Ming cake.

I am sure a more experienced cake decorator can elaborate on the idea. I was just hoping that my son would reconize it as Ming Ming….and he did!!!!!Good Luck.
