Cute Homemade Flip Flop Birthday Cake

As my daughter, Jolie has a summer birthday, most of her parties are summer themed. For her 6th birthday, she insisted that I make her birthday cake. This was my first attempt at making a cool birthday cake.

We were doing a flip-flop themed party at a local arts & crafts store, so she wanted a Flip Flop Birthday Cake. I was stumped on how to do this, until my husband suggested just making some flip flops. As we had several guests coming, I need LARGE flip flops, so I used one of his to make a template. My hubby wears a size 12 shoe. (I wrapped his show is plastic wrap to keep my template clean and sterile.)

I baked 2 cakes in a 9×13 pan, cutting 2 flip flops out using the template. I flip the template over to make a left and a right shoe. I frosted them using orange colored buttercream frosting and skittles on the side as polka dots. I found some fun printed fruit roll ups as the thong part of the shoe. I used a toothpick to push it in and as well as some broken toothpicks to hold up the fruit rollups. I made a try out cake a few weeks before and found with all the humidity in FL, they collapsed onto the cake and just didn’t look good.

She was so thrilled with her cake as well as our guests and the store employees. They were amazed at my design and how simple it was.
