Coolest Hawaii Beach Cake

For my husband’s 30th birthday, I wanted to do something special. Since he’s originally from Hawaii, I decided to make him a Hawaii Beach Cake. I started with a regular 9” x 13” chocolate cake that I made from a mix. I made tan icing from plain vanilla icing mixed with a little of Wilton brown food coloring, and I drew a curvy shoreline with icing to separate about 1/3 of the cake.

I iced that portion with the tan icing. I then used the same vanilla icing and added some blue food coloring until it was a bright light blue, and I iced the remaining 2/3rds of the cake with that. I tried to make the icing look a little wavy for the water effect. I crushed up a box of vanilla wafers to make the sand and carefully sprinkled it over the tan icing. I used the extra sand to outline the base of the cake and added some sea creature fruit chews.

I made a volcano with chocolate muffin mix, so it would be a little denser. To bake the volcano, I used the inverse of a bundt cake pan and covered the hole in the bottom with two layers of foil. The shape turned out really well. I stuck wooden skewers in the bottom of the volcano so that I could secure it well to the cake. I then melted red and orange icing in the microwave and drizzled it over the volcano.

I made palm trees with half of a Pepperidge Farms pirouette stick and clippings from the top of a pineapple. I lined up six pineapple leaves and put a toothpick through the end of the leaves. I then fanned them out and stuck the toothpick into the filling of the pirouette stick. I angled two more toothpicks from the bottom of each pirouette stick so that I could secure them easily to the cake. For the beach towels, I used strips from a multi-colored fruit roll-up.

I later added a drink umbrella (not shown in this picture). When it was time for the candles, I used some sea creature candles that I had found. The cake was a big hit!
