I made this Present Birthday Cake for my niece’s 2nd birthday. I got the idea from the book Confetti Cakes for Kids by Elisa Strauss.
I began by making the tissue paper out of gum paste that I coloured blue. I rolled it quite thin, cut it into varying sizes of squares and then set it on crumpled paper towel to get the shape. I let it dry for a few days, then brushed on silver shimmer dust so that it had some shine to it. I used the rest of the blue gum paste to make the blue balls at the bottom edge of the cake.
I then coloured some gum paste purple and formed all of the loops for the bows around toothpicks and let them dry for a few days.
The cake itself is a chocolate cake with buttercream icing in between the 3 bottom layers. I stacked the 3 layers for the bottom of the box and covered them in a thin layer of buttercream icing so that the fondant would stick to the cake. The lid to the present is one layer of cake covered in buttercream icing and fondant that I coloured pink.
I coloured some fondant purple (trying to match the gum paste bow) and cut it into strips for the ribbon going down the sides of the cake. I used plastic dowels of different lengths on the 2 sides of the cake to get the impression that the lid was slightly open. I then stuck the gum paste tissue paper into the gap and secured it with icing. I rolled a ball of purple fondant and put it in the center and stuck the pieces of the bow into the fondant.
How long did you make your bow loops? They look quite long compared to what Elisa says to do the 10″ ones in her book. How many loops did you use? Did you use 8″ or 10″ cake. Can you pre-make the bow with the gumpaste ball and put it on later? How many balls did it take to cover the bottom? Sorry for all the questions, I’m just in the middle of making this cake as well. cheers!
Cake looks awesome!
