I made this guitar cake for my nephew’s 19th birthday. He is a music nut and just for the fun of it I decided to try it. I’m one of those people who can’t justify paying 20 bucks for a cake pan if I can possibly do it free hand. My grandson’s have a Wiggles Guitar and I asked if I could borrow it. They really thought Grandma was out to lunch but they said okay.
I traced the guitar out on 2 sheets of 8×10 paper taped together end to end. I then got out my biggest cake pan, an 11×16 rectangle and started mixing cakes. I used 2 Betty Crocker cake mixes, baked the cake, let it cool, cut out the shape of the guitar (with my handy traced out wiggles guitar) and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Laying the pattern out on the cake was a little tricky but if you hold your nose the right way it all seemed to fit to get the neck cut out too.
The strings are shoestring licorice, and the tuners are jubejubes. The icing is traditional buttercream icing. I was going to try whipped icing but decided it would be too soft to hold it’s shape. When my nephew’s mom saw his birthday cake she burst into tears and said that no one had ever done something like that for him before.
The cake was an absolute hit with the whole family! I think I’ll keep on trying out new ones for the next birthday in our family.
This cake is truly amazing!
Sandy was my best friend in high school and was a truly awesome person then and obviously continues to be.
Great job Sam!
