My son recently started taking guitar lessons and is very involved with music. I made this guitar cake for his 16th Birthday.
I used 4 boxes of vanilla cake mix, improved by adding buttermilk, melted butter, & almond flavoring using a Southern Living recipe for their “Anniversary Cake”. I also used 1 box of chocolate for the neck of the guitar. I made an actual paper tracing of my son’s guitar and cut around cakes to get the correct shapes.
The strings are metallic embroidery thread. I used 6 strands for the first string, 5 strands for the second, etc. down to 1 strand for the final string. I used silver luster dust mixed with Vodka (it evaporates so not to worry!)and applies several coats to get the metallic silver color. I also used Satin Ice fondant (which actually tastes great)!
Under the silver color I used white tinted a gray color, and then used black on the neck and for accents. Knobs, etc were fastened with toothpicks and formed out of fondant. He LOVED it and actually thought I had his guitar lying on the table when he came in from school.
Very nice job! You should be proud of yourself.
