Cool Homemade Polka Dot Cake

This Polka Dot cake is a traditional fondant cake with buttercream icing underneath the fondant. I used a 10 inch cake on the bottom and an 8 inch pan on the top.

I wrapped ribbon around the bottom edges of the cake and attached it with icing and added a black bow on the top to make it more girly.

  1. Could you please tell me how you make your fondant icing, I hear many people on here say they use marshmallows! I’ve tried to make my own sugarpaste icing but it always seems to dry out and crack and the ready bought roll icing just doesn’t taste the same. I enjoy baking cakes for my family and friends but at the moment am limiting myself to buttercream as I find it easier to work with though I would like to try something different. Many thanks Claire.

  2. I don’t make mine just yet. I might eventually attempt it. I buy a brand called Pettinice. It is wonderful. It tastes so much better than Wilton. You will have to look for it at a cake shop though. In order to keep your fondant from drying out and cracking, you need to put plenty of Crisco shortening on your hands and also I always put a pretty big blob of it in my ball of fondant before I kneed it. If you do get a small tear sometimes you can add a dab of shortening to repair it. I will then lightly dust it. Also don’t let it be exposed to the air for very long. I keep mine in a baggie at all times when I am not rolling it out. Hope this helps.
