Coolest Teapot Birthday Cake

For my daughter’s 1st birthday I wanted to create a simple girly theme and make something that was fun, easy and typically British (to celebrate our heritage). I decided therefore that the way to go was to have a tea party with flower shaped sandwiches to nibble on and a teapot birthday cake as the centerpiece.

The cake was surprisingly easy to make. I used the Wilton sports ball pan for the basic shape. I then sandwiched the two halves together with buttercream and apricot preserve adding a couple of toothpicks so that the top wouldn’t slide off.

To decorate I first made a thin layer of butter cream to coat the cake. This was followed by using the microwave to make some marshmallow fondant which I tinted pale yellow (saving a small amount in white). The fondant was used to make the spout/handle and lid (using a cookie cutter).

The rest was draped over the cake and tucked under. To decorate the spout and lid I then rolled a thin band of the white fondant and made it decorative using a fondant tool. The rest of the decoration was some premade flowers which I attached with dabs of buttercream. The spout and handle were attached with more buttercream and the ever faithful tooth picks.

Finally I topped it with a flower candle and voila. From start to finish (mixing bowl to table) it took me three hours which I’m not sure whether is fast or slow. However for myself at least it was manageable and there was enough cake for everyone without having to eat it for the next few days.

As for her next birthday, well I am thinking either a castle or a fairy I’ll keep you posted.
