This was my first time working with marshmallow fondant, or fondant of any kind. I searched the internet and found a really easy recipe for this fondant which I made about a week before my son’s birthday. I stored the fondant in a ziploc bag in the fridge. I decorated the cake the morning of his birthday.
(this is a wonderful site with many helpful hints: http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm)
I made a pound cake in a rectangle pan (the day before his birthday) and just trimmed the corners until it resembled a rocket and crumb coated it with butter cream icing. After crumb coating the rocket cake I covered it with marshmallow fondant and cut strips and circles yellow and blue colored (Wilton gel) fondant and then added his picture.
I colored the leftover butter cream icing yellow and used it for the wings and red and yellow fondant for the flames. There are a few other touch ups which are not on this picture which I did later that day. It was a lot of work but I really enjoyed making it and can’t wait for his next birthday.
Thank you to everyone who have posted their ideas. Without you and this site I probably would not have made this first attempt.
Happy baking to all.
Love this cake. The flames look great, and I love how the birthday boy’s picture shows in the window.
Nice job with the fondant!
Great rocket ship! I particularly love the flames.
THE COOLEST ROCKET SHIP
Great cake. I was thinking of making something like this for my eldest son’s 5th birthday back in January but ended up that my nan bought him a cake as part of his gift so didn’t want to seem rude and not use her’s. So I’m going to make one for my youngest son’s 3rd birthday in a couple of weeks. This design is great as the shape seems fairly simple to create and you can do it any colours etc. I shall post on here in couple weeks stating how mine turned out.
