First I prepared the cake as directed on the box. Then I poured the batter into a round, 9-inch cake pan and followed the baking directions on the box. After baking, I let the cake cool for 15 minutes and then flipped it onto a cake board.
I then took a knife and cut off (about 1/4 of the cake) the bottom. I then cut that piece in half and placed a piece onto each side of the bigger cake piece. Then all that was left was the decorating. I tinted some store bought white icing black and iced the entire cake. Then I used a toothpick to stencil the skull and cross bones onto it and proceeded to color in it. I added some smaller details to them also.
For my son’s pirate hat birthday cake, I added a red bandanna to his skull and piped red trim around the hat. For my daughter I added a pink ribbon.
