Coolest Pirate Ship Cake Design

My son wanted a Pirate Ship Cake Design for his 4th birthday so after scouring the internet and using ideas from several sources this is what I came up with.

I made two layers of 9×13” cake and 2 loaf pan cakes. I stacked the two 9×13 layers, cutting 2 inches off (long end), then cutting them again to fit one piece in front of the cake (to give it more length). I then cut the loaf cakes to fit on top of the front and end of the ship (front shorter then the back).

After frosting the cake with chocolate frosting I went back over the body of the outside haul of the ship with a basket weave time (flat side) to give the illusion of wood. I used pretzels and frosting to create the rails of the ship. I used Rollos for cannons (and anchored them in the cake with toothpicks). I also used Hershey chocolate bar pieces for the ladder.

Finally, I finished off the cake with pirate men that my son had around the house and I made pirate ship flags from images on the internet and dowel rods colored black (food coloring gel). My son was so excited and everyone seemed impressed!
