Coolest Treasure Chest Cake

I baked two boxes of cake mix and used 9 x 13 pans. Once the cakes cooled, I cut both in half. Three of the halves were stacked to make the bottom of the treasure chest cake. I used frosting and preserves in between each layer.

The last half was used for the top of the chest. I cut and shaped the edges to create a curved shape. I frosted the bottom of the chest first with chocolate fudge frosting to look like wood. I then frosted the top before putting it in place. Don’t worry about frosting the bottom as it won’t be visible.

I used gold coins, Kisses, gold and silver colored chocolate bars, and necklaces to “fill” the chest and prop the top up. I then carefully placed the top on. Fruit roll-ups and yellow M&M’s were used to decorate the top. Red icing outlined the top and bottom. Crushed graham crackers were sprinkled on the plate around the cake to look like sand. Candles were easily placed on top.

My son loved it and still talks about the treasure chest cake.

  2. Thank you so much…I’m pretty sure I’m going to use this for my son’s pirate themed birthday party.

I was wondering where you go that color fruit roll up…it looks brown to me. Is it really red?

    Great job!
