My son, turning 4, was obsessed with Pirates. When he told me he wanted a pirate birthday party, I knew I would have to plan big or just buy the cake from a professional. Our parties usually have about 40 people at them, so I had to feed a lot of people too.
I came to this site and looked at all the other pirate ship birthday cakes and picked and chose what I liked best from each.
I purchased a chocolate cake mix from the store. I made a practice pirate ship birthday cake a week in advance and found that the “Moist” cakes were too moist to carve/shape into the ship I needed. I’m VERY glad I did my test cake first, and I had plenty of supplies to do both.
I made one large 9×13 cake and cut it according to the picture below (hopefully they’ll post the 2nd picture). I’ve marked them so you can see the cuts and where each piece came to rest in the end. The two pieces on the front of the ship were sliced from a 9″ round that I also baked. I held the pieces in place with toothpicks.
I used pipe-like cookies made by Pepperidge Farms for the sides of the ship and Rolo candy for cannons and gold, then I used pieces from my son’s pirate toys (Playmobil sold at Target & Toys R Us). I used a toothpick to add the details to the ship. We printed sails off the computer and used bamboo skewers to hold them up.
It was a great success and everyone LOVED it!
The cake looks great but you didn’t mention how you keep all of it together. Did you use straws? toothpicks? Plan to try to make it for an early June birthday.
