I made a 9×13 cake from a cake mix for this treasure chest cake. I wanted the lightness of box cake because I was worried about the weight of the cake. I cut the 9×13 into unequal thirds with the top being one third and the bottom ends being the same size as the top so I could use the cakes natural curve for my chest.
I leveled the bottom pieces and stuffed them into the back of the chest to prop it open. I filled it with coins and strategically placed candy rings. I piped frosting pearls strands hanging out of the cake. I frosted the white cake with chocolate frosting and added details with gold icing.
