Coolest Pirate Ship Birthday Cake

This cake is the cake I made for my Grandson Brenden’s 3rd Birthday. Brenden was REALLY into pirates so he requested a pirate ship birthday cake. I first covered a large cake board, 18 1/2 x 26 with old world maps that showed where the treasures could be found. I then baked 48 cupcakes, half white, half chocolate and frosted them with vanilla buttercream, tinted blue with some whitecaps for the ocean.

I placed the cupcakes on the board and then started on the ship. I baked a chocolate cake in a large loaf pan. After it cooled I leveled the cake and cut one end in a triangle to form the front of the ship. With those pieces, I built up the back of the ship and also placed a strip across the middle of the ship. I then frosted the ship in chocolate frosting.

Then came the fun part! I used Rolo candies for the cannon port holes and whoppers for the cannonballs. I used Pirouettes cookies for the railing. I bought 3 pirates and some gold pieces and jewels and placed them on and around the ship. For the masts, I used BBQ skewers and copied pirate flags from the internet and used a picture of Pirate Brenden. I then took a fork and ran it along the sides to look like wood planks.

Brenden loved it and so did everyone else.
