I made this Pirate’s Treasure Chest Birthday Cake for my 4 year old boy. It was made from 3 vanilla cakes. I chose the top section from the 3 cakes first, by deciding which cake had the most domed rise (to give the effect of the lid of the chest.) I placed one on the bottom and covered the top in strawberry jam and then stuck the second layer on top.
I then cut out a square section to make the inside hole of the cake and put these aside to use as props to help hold the lid in place. I then put the lid on (in an open position) by using 3 skewers to pin it all together and using the left over cake bits to prop up the lid. I also dug in a couple of coins to help!
I then made a large bowl of chocolate butter icing and covered the whole cake.
Then came the fun part – decorating! As you can see, we had a lot of treasure! My son, and his party guests loved it!
