For my Son’s 7th Birthday we had a treasure hunt theme so a treasure chest was the obvious choice for the cake!
I baked three 9 x 14 cakes. Two of them stacked made the bottom of the chest while the third was used for the lid. I cut a piece of stiff cardboard for the lid to sit on and inserted 3 pieces of cut doweling into the bottom two cakes to hold up the lid (about the size of a pencil). The two bottom cakes were iced first and the top was iced before placing it on top.
I then stuffed it full of gum balls, wine gum candies, Hershey mini bars, gold coins and a Mardi-Gras necklace with graham wafer crumbs and red sprinkles around it. The straps were Fruit by the Foot with Whoppers cut in half and stuck on with icing. The only non edible part was the key and lock which were painted scrapbooking grungeboard.
This homemade treasure chest birthday cake turned out BIGGER and better than I expected and the kids all loved it!
