This Pirate Ship Birthday Cake was my first fondant cake and it took three days to make it.
There are a lot of details – Captain, Pirates, Treasure Chest, Water bottle, Cannon/Cannon ball, Sail etc. and everything was edible and made from fondant.
Making a ship shape with soft cake was the hardest part. I had to redo three or four time because it kept breaking. At the end, I reduced the height and length of the ship from original design, and then I was able to make a ship.
I fed 85 people with this cake, so you can imagine how thick this cake was.
I used chocolate fondant, and for the little Captain and pirates, I used coloring gel to make proper color. Fondant is like a play dough, so it is fun to make small creatures.
When I finally finished this cake, my son and my husband were shocked and proud of me very much. We chartered a real pirate ship (Black Raven) from St. Augustine and we had 85 people on the boat. This cake was definitely big hit and my son was very happy. He has been talking about this Pirate Ship cake.
It was very hard but fun experience.
