My son wanted a Treasure Chest Birthday Cake for his 5th birthday. I researched many different sites and came up with my own version. This cake used 3 – 1/4 sheet cakes. Two stacked on top of each other. Five dowel rods inserted into these two cakes to help support the one on top. Be sure to leave the dowel rods long enough that they stick up above the cakes so you have room to place the treasure.
The 1/4 sheet on top was cut/shaved down to resemble the top of a chest and was placed on a piece of cardboard for support then placed on top of the dowel rods. The entire cake was dirty iced in preparation for the fondant. I used a marshmellow fondant and colored it a light shade of brown. I rolled and cut into strips. Once the strips were placed on the cake to resemble strips of wood I took a fork and a knife to apply the marks to give it a wood grain look. I then took brown food coloring and mixed with vodka to make a paint like mixture. I then used a paintbrush to “paint” the chest.
I used a gold dust mixed with vodka to paint the trim. I then placed crushed vanilla wafers all around the cake to look like sand. I used items from the dollar store for the “jewels” and the “loot”. My little boy went crazy over this cake. His Great Grandmother did not realize it was a cake she thought it was part of the party decorations. Nobody wanted to cut it!!
Good Luck!
