I got the idea from other shark cakes on this site. I did this one for my son’s 3rd birthday – as it was an under the sea theme. I figured a shark was easier to make than a whale, dolphin or octopus!
Per the recommendations from other people who made similar shark cakes, I used the Wilton Wonder Mold cake pan, trimmed to shape, on top of a sheet cake. I had problems with the mold cake cooking evenly – the inside never fully cooked – so I scooped it all out so the shark actually had a real mouth. I had to fill it a little with extra cake pieces to maintain stability.
I couldn’t get the colors just right and should’ve used fondant to create a more life like skin feel for the shark – but I ran out of time. The teeth and eyes are marshmallows that I froze to make it easier to cut. And just used red food coloring in the mouth. I used butter cream icing on top and cream cheese icing between the sheet cake layers.
My son absolutely loved it, and it was a double bonus for him since his favorite color is blue. I got compliments on how tasty it was too.
