Gone Fishing ? You bet! Forty is the magic number for this birthday boy Sam. As surprise for her husband, my client sent me a picture of this fish Sam had caught and bragged all month about. So what better way to honor the old soul than to put his trophy in edible art form.
The oval shaped cake was three 14ish layers of red velvet cake, filled with cream cheese icing. The base icing was butter creme dyed green – then airbrushed to give its lake inspired foresty effect. The brush work was first done in pale green, then darker green in some areas then yellow and finally brown. Extra thick blue butter cream (1/4 more powdered sugar added to regular batch) was generously place down one side of cake to achieve a flowing waterfall effect.
The rocks were made of brown and gray mixed fondant. The fishing pole was a chocolate stick. The wonderful fish was hand sculptured in two pieces with fondant and hand painted and glazed with vodka and luster dust. Then both parts where ideally placed and positioned – waiting for the bait. The dirt was brown sugar and to finish off the edges were touches of chocolate fudge icing and a leaf tip was used to make leaves spring up throughout the rocks.
The overall presentation was well received by the client, Sam and his guest!
