I made this Shark Birthday Cake Idea for my son’s 4th birthday. After checking this site for ideas, I decided I liked the cakes with a picture of a shark better than the ones that tried to sculpt a shark out of cake.
I drew this shark freehand with a toothpick, looking at a shark napkin from my local party store (it was part of a luau party set). I used three shades of gray/white buttercream icing to give the shark some dimension. I could have smoothed it out a bit more with a wet knife, but I hated to mess with any more and risk messing it up (because I was decorating on the day of the party!) I used a tube of Wilton black icing for the eye and mouth. I find it much easier to keep a tube of black icing on hand for these kind of details, rather than going through the trouble of making black icing.
My son requested the chocolate icing and I was pleased with how the dark background contrasted the lighter sea colors. For the bottom border, I used rock candy on a string (found at a candy store in the mall in a wide variety of colors). It worked great for an ocean floor. I used the leaf tip to pipe the seaweed, a star tip for the orange starfish, and a plain round tip for the blue bubbles.
