I love this website and come here for inspiration every time I make one of my kids cakes. This one was for my daughter’s 5th Birthday. She said that she wanted an Ariel cake. I looked on the site for ideas and then headed out to get the supplies.
We didn’t have an Ariel doll for the body and couldn’t find a cheap knock-off so I went to our local Craft store. I was able to find a Doll Pick so I used this. There wasn’t one with red hair so I had to let go of that one. I baked an 8 1/2″ round single cake for the base. I used 2 – 5 1/2″ cake pans for the “rock” that the mermaid is sitting on.
Once I put the 2 smaller layers together I did cut around the top of the cake to make it look more rounded. I frosted the 2 small ones and then covered it in crushed graham crackers for the sand. I placed it on the base and then frosted the base and used gel frosting on top of white butter cream frosting to make it look like water and then swirled it with a knife. I then used the frosting to make the tail and the top.
I didn’t have time before the party to order the starfish and seahorses on-line, but if you plan ahead there are a few good websites for the edible decorations. I called one of our local bakeries, not one of the big chain stores, and I was able to purchase these sugar ones for the added touch.
My daughter loved the Mermaid Cake and so did her friends. The graham crackers on the top were the best part of the cake. Yummy!
Seen the cake in person and it looked great! You did an excellent Mermaid Cake. MOM
Great cake for a great girl!! Job well done.
That cake is so perfect for a princess loving girl. Great work Michelle. I love doll cakes. My mom made a doll cake for me every year when I was a kid.
Beautiful! I love the bedazzling details and the perch you sat her on. This cake is so cute, it would be hard to cut into it. But you probably had to.
Love it!
You’re so talented!! Love this tradition, even though it makes me feel horribly inadequate!
