I made this shark cake for my sons 4th birthday.
I read through a lot of the tips on here and came up with a plan based on that. The ocean was a double layer 9 X 13 vanilla scratch cake, tinted blue. Then iced in buttercream, tinted Wilton Teal. I piped on some darker teal waves. Then I placed sugar candies, gummies and chocolate rocks all around. This part of the decorating only took about 20 minutes total.
I froze that cake overnight, before the party, and left the “shark” to do in the morning. I had baked a scratch chocolate cake in the Wilton football pan and frozen it overnight, then took the tip of slicing off the end and placing it under the front to make the mouth. I skewered the whole thing down into the main cake using wooden shiskebob skewers. I sliced off the sides to thin the shark down and used those pieces for fins (as someone else suggested). Toothpicks were used to ensure they didn’t fall off. Then I simply iced it in buttercream.
The teeth are “hot tamale” candies, cut into points because my son wanted “blood teeth”. The eyes are semisweet dark chocolate, carved into circles. It took about an hour for the shark and we were ready to head to the party. I was amazed how quick this cake was in total!
He loved it!
