I used two 12 x 18 sheet cakes for the bottom and a nine inch round cake for the “Shamu” pool.
I used a butter cream icing recipe for the cake using more Crisco than butter so it was easier to decorate with. I made fondant for the first time and used the water, sugar, cornstarch recipe. I chose to flavor the fondant with coconut and dyed it with Wilton food colors.
I found that the fondant was easy to work with and when I rolled it out I used 10x sugar to keep it from sticking to the counter and roller. One tip I would recommend is to use a heavy pan and a candy thermometer when making the fondant. I found the recipe I used on line.
The Shamus and the bubbles were made out of the fondant and the other decorations were created with icing and decorator tips. To make the Shamu shape, I cut out a printed picture and traced it on the fondant. The bubbles were created using straws and different round shaped bottles.
I created this Shamu Birthday Cake Design at the request of my goddaughter. Last year I made her a candy land cake and this year she made her own request.
