I was so pleased with how adorable this 3D Train Birthday Cake Idea turned out. My 3 year old is a train fanatic! I used a Wilton Cake mold for the engine and printed the instructions off the Wilton web site and also got decorating color ideas there. If you’re looking for something good to use to tie the pan mold together, I used jewelry wire from the craft section and it worked perfectly.
I used the chocolate pound cake recipe off the Wilton website. It made enough batter for the engine and the center train car (which was a standard loaf pan). I then used the cream cheese pound cake recipe (so the kids could have their choice of flavors) off the Wilton website and made two more loaf pan size cakes. I trimmed approx 1 ½ – 2 inches off each end of one of the pound loaf cakes. I placed it on top of the untrimmed cake to make the shape of the caboose. I used Wilton primary colored icing colors and made the butter cream frosting recipe off of the Wilton website.
The center train car is full of a variety of candy and the wheels are chips ahoy cookies with fudge in the center (I think these are limited edition cookies?!) they worked perfectly for the wheels. My husband cut a piece of plywood and we lined it with heavy duty aluminum foil for the bottom. Be sure and plan for plenty of cooling time when you’re planning on how long this will take you. Including cooling time and baking time, this cake took me 10 hours.
This was my first 3D cake and I can’t wait to try one again.
