For this fishing birthday cake I used:
5 Buttercake mixes
Kilo buttercream icing
Fondant icing
I made this cake for my brothers 50th. I used a 14 inch oblong tin for the bottom cake and a smaller square tin for the boat. You can use any size for the boat depending on how big or small you want.
I covered the large cake first in buttercream. To get the effect of water i used a paintbrush dipped in hot water to get swirling effect to resemble water. I cut the inside of the top cake out to form seats and shape the dinghy. Cover it with buttercream and to get the icing nice and flat. I used a paintbrush in hot water to get into nooks and crannies I couldn’t do with a spatula. Worked a treat.
I coloured the fondant and put a long strip around the boat and over the top to form an edge. I made the man and shark, motor, oars, dogs, fishing box, some fish heads out of fondant. I placed the shark on the water and some clean fishing line and a real hook into the shark mouth. (I made it known it was a real hook). I had problems with the fondant breaking so added some gumtrag.
