Cool Homemade Football Birthday Cake Using the Wilton Pan

I made this Football Birthday Cake for my son Casey’s first birthday. My first son had a baseball first birthday, so Casey got a football theme. The easy thing about that is that now that Football season is almost here (his birthday is in late August), there are a lot of decorations on hand at the party stores for the party.

My first time making stars! I just followed the directions that came with the Wilton “First and Ten” cake pan. Voila! I did learn that when using Wilton tint, the color can darken with age. I used almost one whole jar of it to get it dark, but it became an even darker brown the more it sat. I also learned that the stars can get mushy when the frosting warms in your hand in the pastry bag, so be sure to throw it back into the refrigerator to get the frosting firmer.

I used a #3 tip for the writing, strings, and outline, and a #16 star tip for the fat strings and football. This took one box of cake mix (pudding in the mix kind is recommended). Be sure to grease and flour the pan well so it won’t stick. Sometimes hard to see the outlines on the cake, so be sure to save the insert with the picture on it to complete your design the correct way.
