I was given free creative reign making this Soccer Sensation Cake for a girl whose two favorite things are soccer and purple. First I thought how do I combine those? My wonderful husband came up with the idea of a 1/4 sheet cake to look like a soccer field. I combined several cake decorating mediums and techniques.
The “field” is a basic chocolate cake. The grass is all hand piped green buttercream icing. The soccer jersey was made by hand cutting the shape out of handmade marshmallow fondant then securing it to the cake with buttercream icing and hand painting on the lavender detail with thinned out gel food coloring, finishing off the detail with purple decorating sugar.
The letters of the name are cut out of fondant with alphabet cutters. The number 6 was hand cut out of fondant and trimmed with royal icing. The soccer ball is also cake covered first in buttercream, then white fondant and trimmed with royal icing.
This was quite frustrating to fit the small pieces together nicely. Each pentagon and hexagon shape was hand cut from a cardboard pattern. I put peanut butter double stuff Oreo’s in the food processor to make the “dirt” for the sides. It even actually felt like dirt.
Wow! Amazing job! what was the soccer ball made of underneath the fondant?
How did you make the soccer ball?
