This Angry Birds Cake is a three layer cake, bottom was vanilla cake with 4 different swirl colors to match the Angry Bird theme, middle was just plain vanilla cake, top layer same as bottom. I made the batter from a recipes I had (you can get scratch recipes on line also) and poured the batter into 4 bowls, used food coloring, mixed and poured into greased and floured 9 in circle pans. Each color was layered, blue, then green, then red then yellow. Icing was homemade with ingredients such as butter, powdered sugar, meringue powder, Crisco, milk, cream cheese, water and vanilla.
The cake was cooled and then frosted. Refrigerated while finishing the fondant Angry Birds. I had made most of them ahead of time keeping them on parchment paper in an air tight container. The letters were fondant cut outs used with alphabet cookie cutters. Everything is edible minus the toothpicks to keep the bodies on the cake. I used clear glitter gel (all I had that was clear) in a tube by Wilton since I didn’t have time to make my own “glue” to fuse fondant pieces together. It did the job but make the back of the fondant gooey when trying to peel off when it was time to cut the cake.
The cake was covered in blue fondant. I had some cracks and ripples on the sides so I disguised them with the letters around the perimeter of the cake. Of course to a bunch of 9 years they didn’t care. I was cutting everything very close to the last possible second so I am pleased with how this came out in the amount of time I had to do it.
