For these sports ball cakes, I transferred separate sport images and filled in with warm marshmallow cream! Just microwave the marshmallows to keep warm and easy to flow out of parchment cones or bags.
For my son’s 1st birthday party, I made these sports ball cakes. He absolutely LOVED playing with balls, but not any particular one, so I thought I would use several different kinds.
I used the round sports ball cake pan and made 3 half balls and placed them on top of a larger cake. Using the green icing, I decorated the entire big cake with the tip that looks like grass.
Then I decorated a baseball, soccer ball and basketball. Since the football is not round, I used hard edible sugar decorating footballs and put on the edges of the cake, that way all 4 ball cakes were included and matched the napkins/plates.

For my son, Brayden’s, first birthday I made a baseball bat and ball birthday cake, so this year I wanted to stay in the same theme, but I wanted to do something different. So I came up with the idea of baseball and soccer ball cakes, along with a hockey puck cake.
For the hockey puck birthday cake I used a brownie recipe and chocolate fudge icing. For the baseball birthday cake I found a rich yellow buttery cake recipe on the Web. It was very tasty. For the soccer ball birthday cake I used a cherry chip cake mix. The icing is a white chocolate butter cream frosting. I used fruit roll ups and shoe lace licorice to decorate with. These birthday cake recipes were quite easy and turned out really good. Everyone enjoyed the cakes.
Here are the birthday cake recipes I used:
- White chocolate butter cream frosting:
- 2 sticks (8oz) unsalted butter, softened
- 12 oz Baker’s white chocolate, melted and cooled
- 1 cup icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
Cream butter at medium speed in a large bowl. Add cooled melted white chocolate and beat at medium speed until smooth. Add icing sugar and vanilla and beat at low speed until light and fluffy.
Fry’s Fudgey Brownies
- 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup butter or margarine
- 1 cup Fry’s cocoa
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
In a small bowl put all dry ingredients and wire whisk together. In a large mixing bowl add melted butter and sugar and beat together. Add one egg at a time and beat well, add vanilla. Slowly add dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Pour into greased and floured 9×13 baking pan and bake 35-40 minutes or until done.
Buttery Yellow Cake
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
- 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 11 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temp, cut into chunks
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9″ springform or cake pan. In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks until thick and creamy. Add the vanilla and mix again. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl until well blended. Add the heavy cream and the butter. Mix on low speed until all of the ingredients are moistened. Increase to high speed and mix for 90 seconds. Add the egg mixture in small batches and mix for about 15 seconds after each addition (or until well blended). Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a cake tester comes clean and the cake just starts to separate from the sides of the pan. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove and let finish cooling on the wire rack.
I used a glass pyrex bowl and greased and floured it, to make the shape of the ball.
Tips – I had a soccer ball and put a piece of paper on the hexagon shape and cut it out. I downsized the shape to fit and look properly on the cake. I used fruit roll ups for the shapes.
Coca-cola icing
- 1/2 cup margarine
- 1/4 cup cocoa
- 1/4 cup coca-cola
- 3 cups icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
In medium saucepan melt margarine, add cocoa and mix thoroughly, add cola and bring to a boil. Take off heat and add vanilla and then add icing sugar gradually.
Another tip – I freeze my cakes and then they ice much more nicely. No crumbs.
I used half this recipe for the hockey puck, depending on how much icing you like on it.
Very fudgy icing and much enjoyed! Good luck with your own sports ball cakes.
