Cool Salad-Shaped Birthday Cakes

We had a birthday potluck at work with a salad theme-pasta, potato, green fruit, egg etc. I didn’t want to feel left out by making an ordinary cake. This was so much fun to make and so much fun placing it on the table next to all the other “real” salads. Thanks to this website for the inspiration a free cake recipe for any kind of cake you can think of!

This was my first experimentation with fondant. I used pre-colored fondant from a craft store. Rolled out the green fondant and tore it exactly as you would with tearing apart real lettuce and just added a few folds/wrinkles for effect. Everything else was pretty simple and self-explanatory (olives, cherry tomatoes baby carrots, banana, peppers and croutons). I used green buttercream icing on top for any opening between the fondant and light brown buttercream icing for the sides to create a salad bowl effect.

My mother-in-law moved to our area after being ill for some time. She moved to a long term care facility and every night wanted my husband to bring her a salad or two.

Her birthday was coming up and I thought I would make her a salad for her cake. I baked the cake in a large bowl and made the lettuce and all the veggies out of rolled fondant. She loved it.

Salad-Shaped Cake

My mother-n-law loves to order a Greek Salad/Bread from Panera bread company. So I baked a chocolate cake in a round Pyrex pan. I dug out a little to create a bowl shape. I frosted the bowl white, and put green frosting inside. I then frosted some scraps green that I originally dug out to add a little texture.
I cut licorice for the tomatoes, and tried my best to squirt white frosting like slivered onion. I made an almond pound cake for the loaf of bread.
