I got the request for this colorful Mario And Luigi cake from a friend’s friend, so needless to say I was nervous about making this for someone I did not know! I thought “this should be simple enough”….not quite! I really like using fondant as decor and accent pieces, so I decided the characters would be made out of fondant. I hand carved the faces using pre-colored fondant and same with the hat.
Looking back it would have been easier to carve the faces and hats as one whole piece instead of separably because I had to kind of re-shape the hats to fit the tops of the heads. I hand painted on the faces for the details of the noses and ears. I painted the eyes onto sugar sheets because they looked more realistic than the eyes I originally tried to make out of fondant.
For the letters and numbers I used fondant cutters and cookie cutters. It was a lot more work than I thought it was going to be, and I was very nervous when she came to pick it up. She was beyond happy! She said she wasn’t sure how I was going to make it but was VERY happy with the results (so much so I got a very generous tip!).
