This Pub cake was for a 10 year celebration for the pub’s landlady who is a good friend of mine. I wanted to do something different and thought it would be fun to make her pub.
I started by baking 3 x 10” square cakes, which I then cut into 2 (one was approx 7” and the other 3”). I put 2 of the larger cakes on top of each using jam and butter cream to sandwich together and the 3rd I cut to the roof shape and put on top of the other 2. The smaller rectangles were placed at a right angle to the bigger cake, again 2 were sandwiched together and the 3 I cut in half (so 1/2 as thick) and cut to the roof shape.
The bottom windows were cut from the remainder of the cake into a 3 sided bay shape and stuck to the cake with butter cream. I then covered the whole lot in butter cream and then in white sugar paste.
The roof was defined by rolling out black sugar paste and covering the roof shape. I rolled black sugar paste into thin strips for guttering and drain pipes. The windows were made using rolled black icing and they were cut into the white sugar paste The window frames are very thin rolls of white sugar paste and the window sills using thin cut blocks of the white paste.
The name was made using letter cutters and stuck on with water. Flower baskets were brown sugar paste stuck under the windows and I used different colored sugar paste and a flower shaped cutter.
I used a cocktail stick to make the roof tile and brick effect on the top and sides of the pub and then added a back garden with model dog to create interest all round the cake.
