For 3 weeks leading up to my son’s birthday, all he could talk about was the Bob The Builder birthday cake that he was going to have. I searched high and low for Bob characters, toys and decorations to put on his cake. I couldn’t come up with anything. It was now the night before his 3rd birthday and I was starting to panic. I’m not very artistic and I knew no matter how simple the picture, I wasn’t going to be able to draw Bob on a cake. Then I remembered a trick that my mom had told me about. I figured I’d give it a try. This is what I came up with.
I Googled a simple picture of Bob’s head, enlarged it slightly on the photocopier, then cut it out. I placed it on the cake and traced the picture using a push pin. Once I had the outline with tiny push pin holes I traced it with icing using a #1B tip. I mixed my yellow, blue, black and brown icings using Wilton icing color.
Then came my next moment of panic, I forgot to buy the skin color dye. It’s now 10:30 at night and I have no way of going out to buy the icing color. I Googled how to make skin colored icing
and found a very helpful suggestion. Using 1/4 cup of water, I mixed in a little bit of brown, a little bit of red and a little bit of yellow icing coloring . I tested my color on white paper towel and when I reached my desired color, I carefully mixed a little bit at a time into my white icing until my skin color was achieved. I was impressed with how it turned out.
I filled in the outline with small stars using a #16 tip. The letters were printed with a #1B tip and the shell boarder was created with a #18 star tip. I was pleasantly surprised with how the cake turned out and my son was thrilled to have a Bob The Builder cake on his special day.
