I made this realistic shark cake for my son’s 4th birthday party. He wanted a realistic shark. He didn’t like any pictures of cakes where the shark “looked like a cartoon”. I baked two 9×13 cakes and layered them. He wanted Funfetti cake with blue Funfetti frosting. Easy enough. The frosting came with fish shaped sprinkles, which I put in between the layers. I mixed the blue frosting with 1 1/2 cans of plain vanilla to get a less intense blue.
To make waves, I iced the entire cake in the blue, then used the back of a spoon to swirl white into the blue on top. I made the shark out of white pre-made fondant. I added gel coloring in black and a little bit of red for the mouth. To get the shape for the shark, I found a photograph we liked on the computer and traced the outline from the screen. Then I cut the shark out, separating the part that would be gray and the part that would be white. I rolled out the fondant (which I had previously colored), and laid my paper cutout on top. I used a fondant modeling tool to cut around the shapes.
Then I just had to put the pieces together like a puzzle. I added more black gel to a small piece of my gray fondant to make the eyes, nose, and gills. It really was pretty easy to do and my son loved it!
