I made this Finn McMissle cake for my son’s 6th birthday. I used the Wilson’s car pan and then trimmed the cake until it resembled Finn McMissle. I find it easier to trim the cakes after they have been frozen. Freezing the cake also makes it more moist. I also used a toy Finn as my model.
After the cake is trimmed I did a crumb coat, then put it back in the freezer. I rolled up fondant to help with the hood where it comes up by the lights. I also use butter cream sometimes. The butter cream dries nice and stiff so works well for shaping. I find a lot of people don’t like the taste of fondant, but it makes the cakes look really finished. Fondant makes it easy to cover your layers and shaping. Sometimes I like to save the pieces I cut off – and use them for shaping, frosting makes a great glue, and freezing makes it nice and stiff.
The finishing details make the cake come to life. This is where I spend more time. The boys really like the guns of course.
