This watermelon cake was made for a friend’s 40th birthday. Yes, there are 40 party ants at this picnic made of black modelling chocolate. I flavored a vanilla cake with watermelon jello which makes the cake dense like pound cake. I used a stainless steel mixing bowl to bake the rounded ends of the cake and cut one of the cake in half putting one section on the ends of 3 layers of the same flavored cake cut and carved to fit the size of the end pieces.
I used the other one cut in half to show the inside of the watermelon. I filled and crumb coated the cake in watermelon flavored icing and covered the whole cake in light green fondant then used modelling chocolate tinted and rolled flat to give me the shiny smooth surface resembling watermelon rind. I used fondant to fill in the inside of the watermelon slice and to make the seeds.
The leaves are made from left over modelling chocolate cut from leaf cutter shapes and ruffled. I used tiny cocktail straws stuck into the cake for some of the ants to be drinking the juice from inside of the watermelon. All the ants have party hats on to celebrate her birthday!
