For my youngest son’s 4th birthday, we went with a Hot Wheels theme. He LOVES cars, so it was a no brainer.
To create this Hot Wheels racetrack birthday cake I made two 11×15 sheet cakes, one in chocolate (Wilton’s chocolate grooms cake) the other white (Wilton’s yellow cake). I made one 6″ round cake for the top with some of the chocolate batter from the sheet cake.
I frosted the cake in white, and then went over the sides with a small star tip to get the checkerboard pattern. This part was VERY time consuming. It took about 2 hours just to frost the sides of the cake!
Next, I put in the road. The ramp is just some cake that I cut off from shaping the sheet cake.
For the grass on the top I used the grass/hair tip. It made that part go very quickly and have a nice effect.
I bought a chocolate mold for the cars. I wanted the whole cake to be edible.
Though it took about 3.5 hours to frost the cake, it was easy to do and it turned out great!
