I made this creepy 8th birthday cake for my stepson, Gavin (who I adore). He loves the hit T.V. series, “The Walking Dead”. For his birthday, he wanted a zombie party.
We had a blast (and spent hours) looking at different cakes online, for ideas. He finally decided on a cake with a zombie rising from the grave. Although I had been decorating cakes for a couple of years, and turning out several cakes I was really proud of, I’ll admit the zombie intimidated me a little bit. But, I was determined to give it my best shot.
I decided to form the skeleton out of Rice Krispie treats. Then, I covered the body in modeling chocolate. I also formed the tombstone out of Rice Krispies.
The cake itself, or “ground” as the kids called it, was my special, chocolate recipe made from scratch. I made blood out of a corn syrup recipe that I found online and poured it all over the ground, but only after I had the cake set up at the party (otherwise it would have been a mess before we got there).
My favorite part of the zombie was the fingers. I was so happy with how they turned out. They had a lot of detail up close, complete with fingernails made out of almond slivers! :)
The best part of all was seeing the reactions from all the kids. Gavin was thrilled with his brithday cake, to say the least. The kids were so excited with the whole party.
When it was time to cut the cake, they just couldn’t figure out what to do. They said it was CREEPY. LOL!! When I asked them what part of the zombie they wanted they got really excited and couldn’t stop giggling. Smiling from ear to ear, one of the boys said, “I want a rib!” Another said, “I want his hand” and so on, until my sweet, beautiful neice Kiley said with a timid, sneaky grin, “I want it’s brains.” LOL! After that they had a blast pulling teeth and plucking out eyeballs!
It was a FUN day indeed!!! :D
