My daughter loves Kittens and cakes. I got the idea for this cake from a children’s cake book. It was relatively easy.
I made the cake from two 1 liter cake bowls. I shaped them together to make a ball. Everything went well until I started to roll the strands of wool. I just could not get them right. Every strand was either a different thickness or you could see the indents of my finger. But to my surprise, as the cake went on, it all fitted nicely together.
My daughter was one very happy 8 year old on her birthday with the cake. I was pleased too.
Well done. To get even sized rolls try using a play dough shape maker. By gently squeezing the fondant through the shape maker you can create these long sausage shapes. By pausing and carefully adding more fondant inside the shape maker you can create any length you like without breakage! Cut off with sharp knife then place on cake.
you can also use Twizzlers, its much easier
the fact that there not all puurfect :) makes it look more realistic
I have made this cake twice and another helpful idea I found was a “herb” chopper it looks like a pizza cutter but has 5 different rollers on it. I found it at Target for $5.00. I used it to cut 5 different strings at the same time in the fondant. I tried the play-doh trick, but I just didn’t like the way it worked. You can see the pictures of my kitty n yarn cakes at myspace/mycakebox…. Again Love the cake
