This 3D Cat Cake was a carved vanilla sponge cake with jam and vanilla buttercream. The buttercream was spread over the outside of the cake to help it have a smoother finish when it was covered and help it stay moist.
I baked layers of sponge cake and a sphere (Christmas pudding tin) for the head. I carved the cake free hand and covered it in white sugar paste then painted on the stripes. The paws and tail are pieces of icing that are butted up to the cake before it was covered. I made a collar for the cat to help join the head and body.
I covered the board in brown sugar paste and scored the lines for the flooring, painted on the wood effect and then glossed it.
The mice were made from sugar paste as an extra bit of decoration. I needed to get the Happy Birthday message on somewhere, so I thought of making it look like an envelope with the message on, making it the focus of the mice and cats attention.
Wow! Absolutely amazing! Great job!
