I made this for my friend’s daughter’s 9th birthday party to go with her Hawaiian theme. I made two round 10″ cakes. When cooled I sandwiched them together with a thin layer of jam and butter cream.
I then made a template of the parrot using paper, placing it on the sponge I cut the body shape out from one side of the cake and then I used the other half to out cut the log and the tail shapes. I covered the cakes in a thin layer of butter cream. I started with the log covering it in brown icing, by mixing brown food coloring in to white icing leaving a slight marble affect then rolling it out on a clean dinning table dusted with icing sugar to stop it sticking.
I then covered the tail in rolled out red icing. I then put a strip of rolled out red icing around the side of the body. I covered the top in rolled out piece of red icing trimming around the edges and cutting out a shape for the breast and filling it with a piece blue icing cutting it to shape, then cutting out the face and filling it with white icing. Then carefully arranged the shapes on to a 16″ square board
.
Then I mixed the remaining white icing with food colorings to make yellow, orange, light green, darker green, light pink, darker pink and purple which I used to cut out the feathers, flower and the leaf shapes. Using a little water and a paint brush I stuck them in to place.
To add the final touch I mixed green food coloring in to sugar and covered the board.
