I made this Monkey Birthday Cake for my son’s 2nd birthday party, which had a jungle theme.
I downloaded a simple line-drawing of a monkey face to give me an idea of the shape. Then I made three standard chocolate sponge cakes, in circular tins. I sandwiched two together with chocolate buttercream to make the base. I cut the trimmed the third cake into more of a rugby-ball shape and placed it halfway down the base cake, again using buttercream. I then trimmed the base cake, taking a small amount off each side, which I then used to create the ears.
Using the drawing as a guide I piped white chocolate icing for the face and covered the rest of the monkey’s head with chocolate icing, lifting the icing with a fork to get some texture. The ears are decorated with white chocolate buttons, the eyes are milk chocolate buttons and the mouth is made out of brown smarties.
The kids (and adults) loved it and I was really pleased with the result.
