Coolest Horse Cake

I created this homemade horse cake for my friend’s daughters 5th birthday party. When I asked her what kind of cake she wanted, she told me “painted horse cake and I want the horse to have wings.” After doing a bit of research I discovered that a “painted horse” is a horse with spots that look as though they have been painted usually white and brown.

I had never made a fondant horse before so this was a bit of a challenge. I got some ideas from my Google search and this is what I came up with. I made a very easy marshmallow fondant. I than molded the horse parts. I colored some fondant brown and black for the details. I also made a pretty pink bow to girl it up. The tail and mane are brown fondant which I cut up with scissors. I put toothpicks through the legs to help it stand up. I waited to stand the horse up until I arrived at the party.

The layers were filled with the “Cake Doctor’s” fluffy chocolate frosting which is soooo good! The outside of the cake was all covered in frosting (Wilton recipe). The top layer has the fondant horse and fondant clouds. The next layer has fondant fence posts with icing flowers and grass. The bottom layer has fondant flowers and icing grass and flowers. I just love the Wilton grass tip. It is so much fun to make grass!

My little friend, Sierra, absolutely loved her homemade horse cake! She could not wait to eat the horse. Everyone really enjoyed both the design and the taste of the cake.

  1. I really like the cake you made and i would like to try it for my daughter’s birthday. what size cake pans did you use? Did you stack to round cakes together for the first two layers? I am a beginner, to say the least!!
