Coolest Homemade First Birthday Cake in the Shape of a Number One

This first birthday cake was made with a chocolate packet mix (x2) in 2 square pans. When I started to cut and put together I decided it wasn’t high enough so I made 2 more cakes, this time vanilla. I cut out the number one and stuck it all together with Betty Crocker Chocolate frosting. Then covered the entire cake in the frosting.

I rolled out white fondant icing to cover the entire cake. I then used the coloured white fondant which I had made a few days before and stored in bags in airtight containers. I rolled small balls to go all the way round the bottom which covered any imperfections when fondant met plate. I then cut out small circles using different sized circle cutters and placed randomly on top, adhering with a little water first.

I stuck a couple of the circles together to make a base for the candle to stand up as I could not work out where to put it in the cake.

  2. This is a beautiful cake yet still simple. I love that it’s not to busy, not decorated to the max. I think it’s amazing! Just my taste.

Oh and to answer the question about how fondant tastes…it’s fairly sweet so make sure you roll it out pretty thin.

I can’t wait to try this! Thanks for the idea!

  3. I made this cake for my son’s birthday also, was great as this was my first time making such a cake. The spots nicely covered the many flaws in my fondant icing!
