Coolest Castle Cake

I had to make a cake for two little cousins who were sharing a 4-year-old and 3-year-old birthday – a girl and a boy. I wanted to make this castle cake badly, so in order to make sure the cake worked for either a girl or a boy, I came up with the “Blues Clues Castle” cake!

I used two 12” rounds for the bottom layer, two 6” rounds for the top. The layers are frosted with buttercream frosting and then covered with white fondant. The cakes were my usual plain yellow cake mix. I basically followed the Wilton directions for constructing the castle…and this is a tough cake to put together—keeping the towers straight and upright is difficult (as you can see in the photo), but stick to the Wilton directions and improvise where necessary!!

I made patterns from a coloring book for the Blues Clues paws and the dog over the castle door. I cut out light blue and dark blue flowers with the Wilton flower cutter for fondant. I trimmed the windows and doors with buttercream frosting and blue sparkles and flowers. The towers are also covered with buttercream frosting and blue sparkles.

I was fortunate to find Blues Clues dogs at the store (they were party favors) and I placed them at various places on the castle. I purchased light blue and dark blue M & M’s (they have great colors out now!) and placed them around the lazy Susan for effect.

The cake was a hit although I was a little disappointed in the leaning towers.
